As soon as you arrive in Sri Lanka, a friendly Sri Lanka Travel representative will be waiting to welcome you at the airport. From here, your adventure begins with a drive to Habarana – a charming town in the Anuradhapura District, often known as the gateway to wildlife safaris and cultural excursions. Upon arrival, you’ll check in to your hotel and take some time to relax before setting off for your first unforgettable experience.
In the evening, prepare to explore Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmark – the Sigiriya Rock Fortress.
Towering high above the plains, this world-famous site, also called the Lion Rock, is one of the greatest architectural marvels of the 5th century AD. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sigiriya is celebrated for its ancient city planning, intricate water gardens, and remarkable engineering. As you climb, you’ll be amazed by the vibrant frescoes, the polished Mirror Wall, and the breathtaking views from the summit, overlooking a sea of lush greenery.
After taking in the beauty and history of this extraordinary fortress, you’ll return to Habarana for an overnight stay at your hotel—ready to continue your Sri Lankan journey the next day.
Habarana → Polonnaruwa → Minneriya → Habarana
After breakfast, your day begins with a journey into history on the Polonnaruwa Medieval City Tour. Once the second capital of Sri Lanka during the 11th and 12th centuries, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a treasure trove of ancient wonders. Stroll through the well-preserved ruins of the Royal Palace, admire the statues of King Parakramabahu, and marvel at the impressive Parakrama Samudraya reservoir, a remarkable feat of ancient Sri Lankan engineering.
Following lunch at a local restaurant, your adventure continues with a thrilling jeep safari in Minneriya National Park.
Located in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, Minneriya is world-famous for the “Elephant Gathering” – where hundreds of wild elephants gather around the ancient Minneriya Reservoir, especially during the dry season. This natural spectacle is one of the largest wild Asian elephant gatherings on Earth, offering a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife encounter.
Beyond elephants, the park is home to 24 species of mammals, over 170 species of birds, and 25 species of reptiles (with 8 found only in Sri Lanka). As you journey through the park on a 3-hour safari, you’ll witness the untamed beauty of Sri Lanka’s wilderness up close.
In the evening, return to your hotel in Habarana for dinner and a relaxing overnight stay, carrying memories of both ancient grandeur and wild encounters
After breakfast, you’ll begin your journey toward Kandy, the hill capital of Sri Lanka, rich in culture and surrounded by misty mountains.
On the way, your first stop is the Moragahakanda Dam, an impressive engineering marvel standing 65 meters high, with a vast storage capacity of 521 million cubic meters—four times larger than the famous Parakrama Samudraya in Polonnaruwa. Beyond irrigation, this dam also supports inland fisheries, power generation, and water supply to over 2,000 village tanks across the island.
Next, you’ll head to Wasgamuwa, where you’ll visit a traditional village and actively support a community project against human–elephant conflict. Your visit begins at the Sri Lanka Wildlife Conservation Society (SLWCS), where you’ll be warmly welcomed by villagers with a refreshing local drink. After a short introduction, you’ll hop on jeeps and travel into the heart of the village to see firsthand the challenges villagers face from roaming elephants.
Here, you’ll have the chance to participate in an orange tree-planting session—a meaningful conservation effort, as orange trees naturally deter elephants from entering farmland. Each guest plants a sapling, contributing directly to protecting both wildlife and livelihoods. (During the dry season, from July to September, activities may shift to irrigation, fertilizing, or caring for existing trees.)
After a simple countryside lunch, the road winds into Sri Lanka’s central highlands. You’ll pass lush green fields, sparkling streams, and roadside stalls where villagers sell fresh king coconuts. Keep your eyes open—sometimes elephants and other wildlife cross these mountain roads! Don’t forget your camera—the views of the Knuckles Mountain Range are simply breathtaking.
A short detour takes you to the sacred Mahiyanganaya Temple, believed to be the first stupa built in Sri Lanka, marking the spot of Lord Buddha’s first visit to the island. This sacred site is part of the revered Solosmasthana (16 holy Buddhist sites) and holds immense spiritual significance.
Your journey continues through the thrilling “18 hairpin bends” road, a zigzagging mountain route that will leave you in awe as you approach Kandy.
In the evening, immerse yourself in the island’s heritage with a traditional cultural show. Watch graceful Kandyan dancers, vibrant costumes, rhythmic drums, and centuries-old pageantry that bring Sri Lankan traditions to life.
